This could be a stupid question but when "infield fly" is called, is the ball dead or can the runners run? |

No question is stupid if it can help 1 person. As for your question, the ball is not dead on an infield fly.The batter is out and the baserunners can try to advance if the ball is dropped, missed or they can tag up if the ball is caught. The play is dead when the umpire in his discretion fells no advancement will be made by the baserunners and calls time.Hope this helps, and if i missed anything Marshall please add or correct me. |

Good explanation, Andy!
The only other thing to add is that if a the fly ball is 'intentionally dropped' to invoke a dead ball call then the infield fly rule takes precendence, ie. the ball is still alive until the ump calls time.

Thanks guys. I talked to the ump about it on friday. You never know when a situation might come up where this rule needs to be known by my team in a split-second situation. |
